Beth Stroud Loses, and So Does The United Methodist Church
Reverend Beth Stroud was defrocked today. My denomination, The United Methodist Church, decided that she is not suitable for ordained ministry because she is not attracted to the right type of person. We don't seem to defrock clergy for bad theology or failing to help members of their congregation grow as disciples; but lesbians are fair game. We have no qualms about denying a female homosexual her calling, her vocation. Why? Because of whom she hates? Because of whom she hurts? Because of whom she betrays? No, because of whom she loves.

You make a fair point, but I cannot so easily separate orientation in practice. If I were not allowed to practice my sexual orientation, I would be without Ashlee, my wife, and Meyer, my son. My life would be taken from me. Many homosexuals feel the same way about their partners and families.
In response to myself, I must acknowledge that Jesus clearly teaches that discipleship and one's relationship with God must be one's top priorities. He warns against putting family ahead of faith. (See for example, Luke 9:57-62; 14:25-27.)
In response to my response I would invoke my "unnecessary burden" argument and add that The United Methodist Church, unlike the Roman Catholic Church, has no precedent or support structure in place for clergy or laity who choose a life of celibacy.

Our failure to offer the support structure you mention will not be fixed lowering the bar on holiness.
If your house had massive holes in the roof, would you fix the roof or just go out and buy inflatable, floating furniture and some snorkles and wait for the rain?
The easy way out usually leaves situations worse than they started.
